– Minimum marriage age rises to 18 in England and Wales

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-64748930

A new law increasing the legal age of marriage to 18 has come into force in England and Wales.

Previously people could get married at 16 or 17 if they had parental consent and there was no law against ceremonies for younger children which were not registered with local councils.

Under the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act, it is now illegal to arrange for children to marry under any circumstances, whether or not force is used.

Those found guilty of the offence face up to seven years in prison.

The changes do not apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where the minimum age for marriage will remain 16. In Northern Ireland parental consent is required for those under 18 but not in Scotland.

Justice Secretary Dominic Raab said: “Those who act to manipulate children into marrying under-age will now rightly face the full force of the law.”

–  Murderers could be compelled to appear in court or face longer jail terms under new legislation proposed by Justice Secretary Dominic Raab

Justice Secretary Dominic Raab said he is considering new legislation after meeting with the family of Zara Aleena, whose killer avoided court.

Murderers could be compelled to appear in court or face longer jail terms under new legislation proposed by Justice Secretary Dominic Raab.

After meeting with the family of Zara Aleena, whose killer was legally allowed not to attend his sentencing hearing, Mr Raab said he hoped to ensure murderers face longer prison sentences if they opt to skip court in future.

Ms Aleena, a 35-year-old aspiring lawyer, was sexually assaulted and killed by Jordan McSweeney as she was walking home in Ilford, East London, on June 26 last year, days after his prison release.

He added that he is considering granting judges the power to impose longer terms on those who refuse to appear.

Ms Aleena’s aunt Farah Naz met with Mr Raab,

Ms Naz said McSweeney’s absence at the sentencing hearing was a “slap in the face” for her family.

She told the BBC: “He needed to look at our faces and see how he hadn’t just killed Zara, he had killed a whole family.”

The U.S. Copyright Office has ruled that illustrations in a new comic book that were created with the AI program Midjourney are not protected by copyright law, according to a letter issued by the Copyright Office.

The comic book in question, Zarya of the Dawn, was written by Kristina Kashtanova, and the Copyright Office notes the text of the publication is still covered by copyright.

UK gives copyright to computer generated works which do not have a human creator. Section 178 Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA) introduced this law in 1980s. The CDPA designates the author of such a work as “the person by whom the arrangements necessary for the creation of the work are undertaken” (s9(3) CDPA). Protection lasts for 50 years from the date the work is made (s12(7) CDPA). The person making the arrangements would generally be the platform creators but could sometimes be the programmers operating the tool.

Netflix released a documentary titled, “The Most Hated Man on the Internet,” which is about anti-revenge porn activists and their efforts to take down the website, IsAnyoneUp.com. The site was founded by Hunter Moore and allowed anyone to anonymously upload nude photos with social media handles or to submit sexually explicit photos of others without their consent. The documentary follows Charlotte Laws, whose daughter’s photos were shared on the site, as she launches a campaign to shut it down.

In the Netflix documentary, Charlotte’s daughter took private photos of herself without any intent to share with anyone. Unfortunately, her account was attacked by Moore, and her photos were uploaded to IsAnyoneUp.com together with all her social account information. Her stepfather, who is an attorney, threatened to file a lawsuit against Moore for violating copyright laws, claiming Charlotte’s daughter held the copyright to those private photos.

–  Eminem v. Real Housewives https://www.billboard.com/pro/eminem-sues-real-housewives-drake-deposition-drama/#

The rapper’s lawyers filed a case at the U.S. trademark officeaimed at blocking Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon (stars of The Real Housewives of Potomac) from securing a federal trademark registration on “Reasonably Shady,” the name of their hit podcast.

Eminem’s attorneys were concerned about the similarity of the name to  “Slim Shady” — a nickname the rapper has used for decades for a dark, violent alter ego. They said consumers might be tricked into thinking Eminem was somehow involved with the podcast.

“Confusion is unavoidable,” the rapper’s lawyers wrote. “Applicant’s mark ‘Reasonably Shady’ simply looks and sounds like ‘Shady’ and suggests that it represents the services of Mathers.”

– Lady Gaga gets sued by dog theft accomplice for not receiving the $500K reward for returning them

Lady Gaga is being sued by the woman charged with the theft of her two French bulldogs.

Jennifer McBride said that Gaga, 36, made it clear that she would pay the person who returned her dogs $500K, ‘no questions asked.’

The Poker Face singer announced the reward in February 2021 after her dogs were taken.

McBride reportedly wants the $500K and also wants the court to triple the damages to $1.5 million for posting the misleading reward, according to TMZ

Gaga’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, was walking 3 of Gaga’s pups in Los Angeles on February 24, 2021 when several men pulled up in a car, jumped out and stole the two dogs Koji and Gustav,  … also shooting Fischer in the process.

L.A. County Deputy District Attorney, Michele Hanisee, told TMZ McBride was aware the pups were stolen when she returned them.

Her intention was to obtain the reward. She also had known the men involved in the shooting for years.

McBride originally returned the dogs to the American Horror Story actress at the LAPD Olympic Community station two days after they were taken.

She was later charged with receiving stolen property in connection to the left.

The woman was also charged with being an accessory to the crime after the fact.

Allegedly, McBride was dating the father of one of the men responsible for the crime.

The man who shot Fischer, James Howard Jackson, pled no contest to a count of attempted murder and was given 21 years in prison.

She later pled no contest to one count of receiving stolen property and got 2 years probation.

The Hoover free flights promotion was a marketing promotion run by the British division of the Hoover Company in late 1992. The promotion, aiming to boost sales during the global recession of the early 1990s, offered two complimentary round-trip plane tickets to the United States, worth about £600, to any customer purchasing at least £100 in Hoover products. The campaign was a financial disaster for the company and led to the loss of Hoover’s Royal Warrant after the airing of a 2004 BBC documentary
